Harm of Water Scale to Ice Maker

Feb 18,2021
In daily life, we often find that a thick hard substance appears on the inner wall of a hot water bottle after a long time. This is called " water scale" or " water alkali". What are the harm of  water scale to the ice maker?

When the water is heated, the dissolved calcium and magnesium ions in the water and certain acid radical ions form water-insoluble compounds and mixtures, thereby forming two water-insoluble precipitates, "calcium carbonate" and "magnesium carbonate". The precipitates adheres to the vessel, and a thick layer of water scale will form over time.

Water contains calcium and magnesium ions, as well as carbonate, bicarbonate, sulfate and so on. When the water reaches a certain temperature, the calcium and magnesium ions in the water combine with acid radicals to form calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, calcium sulfate, etc., which precipitate out, thereby forming water scale. The formation of water scale, in addition to making the ice cubes produced white, will also accelerate the aging of the ice tray, and the accessories will corrode faster.

In this case, some milk tea shops will install a filter at the water inlet of the ice maker to reduce the production of water scale. Although installing a filter will reduce the generation of water scale, it cannot completely solve the hidden problems. Over time, some minerals that are not filtered out of the water will still produce water scale in the machine. Therefore, in daily use, we should pay more attention to water we use and do regular cleaning in time.
